As the year draws to a close, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on an eventful 2024 here at Coppice & Crown, and to thank you for your continued support. It’s been a remarkable year filled with milestones, growth, and special moments, and we’re delighted to share some highlights with you.
A New Planer to Enhance Craftsmanship......
The arrival of our new Leadermac planer has been a game-changer for our workshop. This state-of-the-art piece of equipment is one of the rarest in the country, allowing us to plane our wide boards with greater precision and efficiency. The planer takes rough sawn boards, typically 28mm thick, and skilfully planes them down to a smooth, consistent 21mm finish. This not only guarantees a beautiful surface but also allows us to maintain accuracy across all our boards, ensuring they meet the highest standards of craftsmanship. A New Addition to the Coppice & Crown Family......
On a more personal note, 2024 brought us our greatest joy—the arrival of our baby girl, Bluebell, in April. Polly and Tom have been over the moon, balancing parenthood with the demands of running a family business. With Sugar’s help keeping an eye on her, Bluebell’s laughter and energy have brought a new vibrancy to our team, making this year unforgettable. Thank you so much for all your well wishes and kind words for our family!
Sharing Our Story with New Audiences ......
This year, Tom and Polly had the pleasure of connecting with new audiences through talks in Lewes, Newbury and Bristol. These events gave us an opportunity to share the Coppice & Crown journey, from our eco-conscious ethos to the craftsmanship behind our solid wood flooring. Polly gave an engaging presentation about the Demand for British Timber at the National Forestry Conference with Country Land and Business Association (CLA), Forestry Commission and Grown In Britain which was held at Newbury Racecourse. The conversations and connections made during the event as well as the Fourth Door Review ‘Pioneering the Potential’ and Evolving Forests ‘Future of Timber’ Panel discussion have been truly inspiring.
Collaborating with the National Trust ......
We are honoured to be part of the National Trust’s restoration of the historic Bath Assembly Rooms. The National Trust have supplied us with trees from their Brockhampton Estate in Herefordshire, for Coppice & Crown to produce into solid wood flooring. Having the opportunity to be part of the renovation story for the prestigious project has been a highlight of the year, allowing us to be part of preserving the architectural heritage of such a treasured site. The National Trust will be documenting the sustainable production process, which will take at least 2 years, so we will keep you updated as plans progress.
Investing in Sustainability: Heat Treatment Plant ......
Our commitment to sustainability took a significant step forward with the installation of our new heat treatment plant. This investment not only enhances the durability of our timber but also aligns with our eco-conscious values by allowing us to process wood more sustainably. It’s a proud moment for our team as we continue to innovate responsibly. We’re very excited for the first few projects of Thermally Modified Timber to start installation early January 2025.
Coppice & Crown in the Press......
2024 has also been a fantastic year for press coverage, featuring in several articles celebrating British craftsmanship and sustainable design. Two particular highlights were our mentions in The Times, where our solid wood flooring was showcased as an example of timeless quality and eco-conscious production for Josh Widdecombe and Rose Hanson’s Home. We also featured in the article of How Jeremy Clarkson kickstarted a rural planning revolution. Seeing our work recognised on such a platform has been both rewarding and humbling, and we’re proud to share this achievement with all of you.
