Bella and Toby designed and built their beautiful Ash Barn in Devon using a mix of local, ethically sourced materials, our wood cladding being one of them. Throughout the project they followed the Living Building Challenge, addressing a matrix of building imperatives throughout the build such as ‘health and happiness’, ‘water’ and ‘materials’ and other integral parts of the challenge.
Using locally sourced and milled hardwoods helped reach some of the goals set by this challenge as well as creating a natural environment in the home. Choosing the right naturally beautiful interior wood cladding for their home was one of the most important aspects. As a final wall finish, wood adds warmth and texture into the home, whilst having a low environmental impact at the same time.
Upstairs, following the ash clad ceiling, you walk through to the couples home office where they run their own landscape architecture and design company. This space is light and engaging, and the wood cladding creates a natural and inspiring work space for themselves and their colleagues. With such high ceilings, the couples have taken the internal wood cladding and draped in over onto the tops of each wall, creating a warmth and cosiness in the main sitting room area. Paired with sheepskin rugs and the central woodturner, the couple have done an incredible job of creating such an inviting family home.
