Anne De Geus, artist and resident of this beautiful Dulverton townhouse chose our Character Oak for a quiet luxury interior.
Dulverton is known by many as the gateway to Exmoor. It is a place that many families come to holiday in and spend time discovering the beautiful walks and scenery of the local landscape. Dulverton is also the town of many a historic home, with The Old Bakehouse being no exception. Tucked away, but still close enough to the bustle of the town centre, this house is like walking into a mini oasis of gardens and beautiful interiors.
As you open the door into The Old Bakehouse, you’re not greeted with the smell of bread as you may have expected hundreds of years ago, but just as welcoming is the waft of freshly made coffee waiting for you. Anne de Geus, owner of The Old Bakehouse and grandmother of Polly from here at the sawmill has invited us in for a tour of her home. Anne used our Classic Oak wood flooring across the downstairs areas of her home, and we’ve come to take a peek.
As you enter the kitchen, light floods in from the the windows on both sides of the room, looking out into the property’s front and back gardens. Nature follows in from the gardens, with surfaces adorned with healthy houseplants and ferns and a bowl of apples from the garden sits invitingly on the kitchen wall. This kitchen wall was an integral part of the bakehouse, and its history has been kept by Anne who sees it as a functional and natural divide of the kitchen areas.
The kitchen is a highly practical room, not just used for eating and cooking, but it is also a through run from each garden. It was important for Anne to have a floor that was easy to care for, and didn’t require any maintenance when walking through with gardening boots from one garden to another. Easy to keep clean, but still warm to the touch, our Classic Oak was chosen for its hardwearing durability as well as its looks.
Following on from the kitchen is a cosy sitting room, where our Classic Oak was used for its warmth and practicality. With a log burner in the room for the winter months, it was important for Anne to have a flooring that was easy to sweep, rather than a carpet, which would have harnessed fragments of log every time the fire was loaded and lit. The sitting room is a cosy place and a room that lends itself to the evenings or winter months, with inviting neutral tones used in the soft furnishings of the room.
The Old Bakehouse has been sympathetically renovated with Anne at the centre of every design decision. With design and art at the forefront of her mind Anne moved from Sussex to Somerset to be closer to her family, and here she continues to paint, using the local landscapes and countryside to influence her. Her paintings are still shown in galleries in the South East, as well as Lantic Gallery in Tiverton, Devon.
