When it comes to choosing oak flooring, two of the finest choices are Heritage Oak and Classic Oak. Each offers a unique character, but how do you decide which one is right for your space? If you’re looking for a floor that will stand the test of time, both in durability and aesthetic appeal, it’s important to consider the differences and benefits of each.
What Defines Heritage Oak?
Heritage Oak is the epitome of timeless craftsmanship. It carries a rich history in every grain, full of characterful knots, saw marks, and an aged patina that tells a story with its’ textured surface. These boards are planed to 23mm, however the undulating surface means this is slightly lower in some areas.
- Rustic & Characterful: Ideal for those who appreciate an organic, reclaimed aesthetic, Heritage Oak has a textured and lived-in fee that immediately looks like it’s been there for 200 years.
- Deep Tones & Natural Aging: This oak showcases deep, warm tones that develop over time, making it a stunning choice for traditional and contemporary interiors alike.
- Perfect for Period Homes & Unique Spaces: If you’re working on a restoration project or want to bring a sense of authenticity to your space, Heritage Oak is a perfect fit.

Why Choose Classic Oak?
Classic Oak is all about understated timeless beauty. It offers a versatile foundation for any interior style. When ordering this flooring you would receive the beautiful characteristics of British Oak, such as cats paws and interesting knots on these boards, however here you have a flat/ level surface that’s planed to be smooth at 21mm.
- Elegant & Versatile: Classic Oak provides a smoother, more uniform finish, making it ideal for modern, minimal spaces or perfectly suited to period homes too.
- Lighter Tones & Natural Sophistication: The neutral shades and subtle grain make it perfect for bright, airy spaces.
- Ideal for Contemporary & Timeless Interiors: Whether in a country home or a sleek city apartment, Classic Oak brings warmth without overpowering the room’s aesthetic.

- Consider Your Style: If you love a more traditional, rustic feel, Heritage Oak is your go-to. If you prefer a refined and elegant look, Classic Oak is the better choice. Heritage Oak tends to be most popular with clients who have listed properties, farmhouses or cottages who want to restore traditional flooring to its former glory and love natural character. That being said, Classic Oak looks perfectly at home in these country style spaces too!
- Think About Natural Light: Lighter spaces pair beautifully with Classic Oak, while darker, more atmospheric rooms can benefit from the rich hues of Heritage Oak.
- Future-Proof Your Flooring: Both are built to last, but Heritage Oak embraces aging, while Classic Oak maintains a more consistent appearance over time.
- Pairing with Furniture & Decor: Classic Oak can complement modern furniture and clean lines, while Heritage Oak pairs beautifully with antique or characterful pieces.

The Finishing Process
We have different finishing advice for both options and we can work with your floor fitter to offer the best solutions. Arguably, Heritage Oak has a slightly easier finishing process and doesn’t involve the need of hiring a belt or orbital sander. Some clients choose not to sand the Classic Oak with a belt or orbital sander, either if they want more of a rustic finish as opposed to a glossy shine. Please share images with us of the desired look you want to achieve for your home and we can happily help advise the best option.
